Catch and release is similar to breadcrumbing, which is the act of sending out flirtatious text messages aka breadcrumbs in order to get the attention of a sexual partner. The digital breadcrumbs are left out, just enough so the sexual partner doesn’t lose interest. Catch and release is when someone in an online community “catches” a date, but when it comes time for commitment, they “release” and get out of dodge quicker then you can text “Wyd?” on your cell phone.

Breadcrumbers have a sick sense for when someone is close to moving on from them, but in typical breadcrumber fashion they use that opportunity to leave the partner a trail of breadcrumbs so they don’t forget about them. A trail of breadcrumbs can be anything from your cell phone like a text message, social media poke, like, or reply. There are basically three types of breadcrumbers:

Broken heart breadcrumber: This breadcrumber just broke up with his or her boyfriend or girlfriend and doesn’t want to let them go, so they may like an Instagram picture so their ex remembers them.

Put you on hold breadcrumber: There’s breadcrumbing as a way of keeping a dating prospect on “hold.” This is when you aren’t ready to date the person you are breadcrumbing but you want to keep them around for that time when you are ready.

Gamer breadcrumber: This is the worst type of breadcrumber. This breadcrumber does it as a kind of game, the person has no interest, but is more interested in themselves staying relevant to the person they are breadcrumbing.
